Cedar Road-flooding update
I contacted the council following another recent flooding episode in Cedar
Road, near to the junction with Forthill
Road, to find out what progress has be made
in getting it sorted. This is something I have been pursuing for a long time and
have regular correspondence with the council and Scottish Water about. In
recent years the flooding has resulted in a surcharge of sewage.
In response I received this update from the City Development Department:
As noted in the Local Flood Risk Management Plan, Scottish Water,
Dundee City Council, Perth & Kinross and Angus Council are currently
working together to deliver a comprehensive Tayside Integrated Catchment Study.
The aim of the study is to understand the complex interactions between the
various sources and pathways of flooding (surface water, sewers, burns etc) and
determine the most appropriate way of reducing flood risk.
The integrated catchment study model is now complete and has identified
numerous flood clusters within the catchment area. One such area includes the
need for increased sewerage capacity downstream of Cedar Road. The next stage
of the study is to prioritise the flood clusters to be taken on to the optioneering
stage which considers alternative solutions and costs. Outline design of the
selected option will follow including confirmation of the necessary funding.
Thereafter, detailed design will be taken forward by the appropriate authority
or jointly depending on the solution proposed. Given the necessary preparatory
work required, unfortunately it is unlikely that any schemes arising from the
Tayside Integrated Catchment Study will be constructed before 2018.
Until the integrated catchment study is fully completed and detailed
proposals to resolve sewerage capacity issues are developed, there will
continue to be a risk of out of sewer flooding during extreme rainfall events.
Scottish Water have confirmed previously that they will continue to
carry out planned sewerage cleaning maintenance and any sewerage system repairs
necessary to maintain the current capacity of the sewerage system at Cedar
Road. They will also continue to carry out any necessary clean ups of the area
if they are made aware of any flooding events. The Scottish Water contact
centre telephone number is 0845 601 8855.

Getting things done- Panmurefield Village
I attended a very productive site
meeting today with representatives of the environment department and local residents
to look at, among other things, the provision and location of litter bins in
part of Panmurefield Village.
There is concern about the litter that is dropped by some pupils making their way back
to school after visiting the shops in Panmurefield during their lunch break. In
recent months the residents themselves have carried out their own litter pick
and filled a number of rubbish bags.
It was agreed that larger bins will
be supplied and repositioned to take better account of the route used by the
pupils. Hopefully the new school session will see an improvement.

Another unadopted pavement upgraded
I was pleased to see that the
work to upgrade the unadopted pavements in Stewart Street is progressing well.
Stewart Street has featured in a provisional programme of works several times
over the years, only to be overtaken on the council’s unadopted footways scheme
priority list as other pavements received higher ranking points following the
annual assessment.
Stewart Street is well used by
pedestrians as a link road between Cedar Road and Forthill Road and they will
benefit from the new pavement and kerb. In recent years a number of pavements in the immediate area have been
brought up to standard including Traill Street, Cedar Road, Davidson Street and
Fintry Place, so it’s good to see the unadopted pavements in this local
cluster of streets nearly completed, although
there are plenty of other locations in Broughty Ferry still to do!

Broughty Ferry YMCA
I was delighted to attend a cheese and wine event at Broughty
Ferry YMCA last night to help celebrate its 150 th anniversary.
We were entertained with a talk on the history of the building,
a piper, a ballet demonstration by Ferry Dance School and music from a local group.
There was also a wonderful collection of photographs of activities in the YMCA
from over the years and general photographs of Broughty Ferry locations.
The YMCA in Broughty Ferry was founded in premises in Gray
Street in 1866, before moving nine years later to the present premises in Brook
Street. Some work has been done recently to improve the premises and more
refurbishment is planned.
Many thanks to the staff, committee and local volunteers who
do so much to help provide a community facility with activities for all ages
and for playing such a significant part in Broughty Ferry lives.

The Bucket Trail
I'm enjoying following the Oor
Wullie Bucket Trail. I have visited those in Broughty Ferry, four are pictured
here, and I intend to get round as many as I can of the other Wullie’s in Dundee.
There are fifty five sculptures of Oor
Wullie sitting on his bucket. They are decorated by a variety of different artists
and designers.
It is the biggest public art event to have been held in the
city. It runs from 27 June to 27 August and at the end of the event the statues
will be auctioned off to raise funds for the Archie Foundation’s appeal for a
new twin operating theatre pediatric surgical suite for Tayside Children’s
Hospital.
More details about the bucket trail and how to donate to the Archie
Foundation can be found on the following link: http://www.oorwulliebuckettrail.com/about/
